Dubai has taken a major step toward the future of transport with the launch of Phase 1 of its driverless robotaxi service. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the rollout in partnership with US-based autonomous vehicle company Cruise, bringing self-driving cars from demonstrations into real-world use on city roads.
In a significant move, the RTA has also granted Baidu’s Apollo Go a first-of-its-kind permit in Dubai. The approval allows fully autonomous vehicles to operate on public roads without a safety driver on board. This marks a major milestone for commercial autonomous transport in the city.
Alongside this, global technology companies WeRide and Uber have started public test services for robotaxis. Passengers can now book these driverless rides through the Uber app in selected areas, including parts of Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim. These trials signal the beginning of wider autonomous ride-hailing services in Dubai.
The RTA has identified specific high-precision pick-up and drop-off locations for the robotaxis. While these are designated points, they are grouped around major landmarks and residential areas to ensure smooth and safe operations.
Officials say the initiative supports Dubai’s long-term vision of smart and sustainable mobility, positioning the city as a global leader in autonomous transport solutions.
