The United Arab Emirates launched a number of climate-focused projects in 2025, enhancing its standing as a pioneer in environmental innovation and sustainability. These measures reflected a long-term national goal to expedite the transition to a low-carbon economy while also promoting conservation at home and abroad.
Abu Dhabi launched the world’s first round-the-clock gigascale renewable energy project earlier this year, combining solar generation and battery storage to provide one gigawatt of continuous clean power every day. The facility now houses the world’s largest integrated solar and battery energy storage system.
Scientific research also advanced, with the vessel Jaywun performing the most extensive modern seabed sediment survey ever conducted along Abu Dhabi’s coast to investigate climatic impacts on the Arabian Gulf. Circular economy ambitions gained traction when BEEAH unveiled the region’s first commercial waste-to-hydrogen facility, along with a federal scheme to recycle used tires for industrial use. Water security initiatives have been enhanced with the introduction of a new geospatial platform aimed at reducing groundwater use and boosting alternative water sources.
New plant discoveries, greater mangrove identification, large-scale coral restoration, and larger natural reserves all made significant contributions to protecting biodiversity.
