India Turns Net Exporter of Finished Steel in October

India emerged as a net exporter of finished steel in October, signalling a dramatic shift in trade dynamics. According to provisional government data, steel shipments totalled 0.6 million metric tonnes, a 44.7% increase over the same month last year. Imports, on the other hand, declined dramatically to 0.5 million metric tonnes, representing a 55.6% year-on-year decrease.

The increase in exports coincided with a steady rise in domestic production. In October, India’s finished steel output increased by 10% to 13.4 million metric tonnes, boosted by consistent manufacturing across major steel producers. Consumption was also strong last month, at 13.6 million metric tonnes, up 4.7% from a year ago, indicating continued infrastructure and industrial demand.

Crude steel production was 14.02 million metric tonnes, up roughly 9.4% from the previous year, as steel factories worked at higher capacity levels. After a year-long gap, India has returned to being a net exporter as a result of higher output and fewer imports.

A year ago, India’s steel imports exceeded exports, reversing the present trend. This turnaround demonstrates strong international demand and reduced reliance on foreign supply. With exports exceeding imports by 0.1 million metric tonnes, India’s steel industry continues to display resilience and expand global competitiveness.
