India’s Kohli becomes second-highest run-scorer in international cricket

India’s Virat Kohli has become the second-highest run-scorer in international cricket after his match-winning knock of 93 in the first One-Day International against New Zealand. With this innings, Kohli overtook Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkara to move into second place on the all-time list, now behind only Sachin Tendulkar.

Kohli has amassed 28,068 runs across Tests, ODIs, and T20 internationals since making his debut in 2008. Speaking after being named Player of the Match in Vadodara, he described his journey as a dream come true and said hard work, self-belief, and gratitude have defined his career.

His 91-ball knock helped India chase down a target of 301 with four wickets and six balls to spare, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Though he missed out on a century, Kohli said milestones were not on his mind, adding that his focus was only on winning matches for the team.

In his 17th year of international cricket, Kohli said he has adjusted his approach, aiming to counterattack early rather than play defensively. He believes this mindset allows him to put bowlers under pressure while still playing to his strengths.

Now playing only ODIs after retiring from Tests and T20s, Kohli is widely expected to target the 2027 World Cup.
