India’s Power Strength Makes It A Global Hotspot For Data Centres: Piyush Goyal

Union Minister Piyush Goyal said that India is emerging as a favoured destination for global data centre investments due to its strong power and robust national electricity infrastructure. He stated that India has no power shortages and is well-prepared to meet potential demand surges caused by data centres, artificial intelligence, and digital services.

Goyal told the media that India’s integrated national power infrastructure, which has a capacity of roughly 500 gigawatts, gives it a significant advantage over numerous advanced economies. He pointed out that, unlike Europe and the United States, India has a single national grid, which allows for efficient power distribution across sectors. According to his electricity supply will be sufficient for households, agriculture, industry, commercial users, data centres, and global capability centres.

Rising worldwide interest reflects this advantage. Google has announced a $15 billion investment in AI infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh, including a massive data centre in collaboration with the Adani Group. Amazon Web Services intends to invest $7 billion in Telangana over the next 14 years, and Microsoft has committed $17.5 billion to build AI-focused infrastructure in India.

According to Goyal, coal-based capacity additions are critical to provide affordable and reliable electricity for an expanding economy.
