ISRO Satellites Power Disaster Response in Jammu Kashmir, Boost Early Warning and Damage Assessment

Space-based technologies are emerging as a vital tool for disaster monitoring and response in Jammu and Kashmir, with the Centre highlighting their growing impact in Parliament. Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singhinformed the Rajya Sabha that satellite-driven inputs are being widely used to track natural disasters such as floods, landslides, and forest fires.

He noted that advanced geospatial products, including flood inundation maps, landslide inventories, and forest fire alerts, are generated and disseminated through Indian Space Research Organisation geoportals like Bhuvan and the National Database for Emergency Management. These platforms enable timely and accurate information sharing, significantly improving disaster preparedness and response.

Additionally, ISRO has developed a customised mobile application and dashboard for the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department, allowing real-time reporting and monitoring of forest fires using geospatial data. The space agency is also collaborating with the Jammu and Kashmir Remote Sensing Application Centre to implement key programmes such as natural resource mapping, wetland inventory, biodiversity assessment, and land degradation studies. These initiatives underscore the transformative role of space technology in sustainable development and disaster resilience.
