The Maharashtra government has formally recognised August 7 as Sustainable Agriculture Day, to be observed every year. This date marks the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, widely regarded as the architect of India’s Green Revolution. The announcement was made via a government resolution. It aims to honour Dr. Swaminathan’s transformative contribution in increasing India’s food grain production, particularly wheat and rice.
To honour his legacy, all agricultural universities in the state have been directed to establish Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Bio-Happiness Research Centres. These centres will focus on sustainable farming methods, climate adaptation technology, and improving food security. The initiative also aims to provide solutions that benefit farmers and the environment.
The state Agriculture Commissioner has been charged with developing specific criteria for organising statewide events. Seminars on sustainable agricultural methods will be held, as well as public awareness campaigns promoting eco-friendly practices and award ceremonies to recognise significant contributions to agriculture.
Dr. Swaminathan’s pioneering research enabled India to overcome chronic food shortages. He also firmly supported environmentally responsible farming and climate-resilient agricultural models. The new projects aim to preserve his vision and promote innovation in sustainable farming throughout Maharashtra.
