Manipur is preparing to sell a new variety of traditional rice, the white Chakhao, to Japan, marking yet another milestone following the international success of its black sticky rice. The state’s Department of Agriculture has inked a Memorandum of Understanding with Japan for a 20-metric-tonne trial shipment of this aromatic white variety. The deal was confirmed during APEDA’s first Bharat International Rice Conference, which took place from October 30 to 31 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
According to Peter Salam, Director of the Agriculture Department, the worldwide show attracted over 1,000 purchasers from 80 nations, creating a powerful platform for promoting Manipur’s unique rice varieties. While the black Chakhao has already garnered popularity for its high nutritional value and distinct flavour, the white variety is relatively unknown outside of India.
White sticky rice, recognised for its delicate texture and natural sweetness, has piqued the interest of various Southeast Asian countries, notably due to its suitability for sushi preparation. Salam stated that past cultivation was limited due to a lack of farmer interest and exposure.
