The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology has announced a $30 million investment to establish a semiconductor design company in Muscat, a significant step in Oman’s ambitions to grow its ICT sector. The project aims to create 30 to 100 direct jobs over the next two years, thereby strengthening the country’s presence in advanced technological industries.
According to Khulood Al Hadhrami, Senior Technology Investment Specialist at the Ministry, semiconductors are a strategic essential that serve as the foundation for modern electronic devices. She emphasised their importance in sectors like computing, healthcare, energy, transportation, defence, and artificial intelligence, stating that AI cannot function successfully without semiconductor technology.
Al Hadhrami claimed that the worldwide semiconductor sector is rapidly expanding, with revenues expected to exceed $1 trillion by 2030. Oman aims to collaborate with government agencies, private companies, and international institutions to attract foreign investment and foster local expertise in this emerging industry.
Furthermore, she emphasised the importance of long-term commitment and expressed confidence that the new initiative will strengthen Oman’s digital capabilities and accelerate its development into a regional technology hub with strong infrastructure and skilled talent.
