Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Indian chess Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi for winning the bronze medal at the FIDE World Blitz Chess Championship held in Doha. The Prime Minister called the achievement a proud moment for India and praised the young player’s strong performance on the global stage.
In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi said Arjun’s success shows India’s growing strength in chess. He highlighted the 22-year-old’s skill, patience, and dedication and said his achievements would inspire young players across the country.
Arjun Erigaisi’s bronze medal in the Blitz Championship comes soon after another major success. Earlier, he also won a Bronze medal at the FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship, showing consistent performance at the highest level of international chess.
At the Blitz Championship, Erigaisi played strongly in the early rounds. He scored 14.5 points out of 18, with 12 wins, five draws, and only one loss. This helped him reach the four-player knockout stage. He was later defeated in the semifinal by Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov, finishing with a bronze medal.
In the Rapid Championship, Erigaisi scored 9.5 points in 13 rounds. With that result, he became only the second Indian male player, after Viswanathan Anand to reach the podium at the event.
