PM Modi, Finnish President Discuss Ukraine Conflict, India-EU Trade Talks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone conversation with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb, during which they discussed the Russia-Ukraine situation, India’s trade relations with the European Union, and areas of bilateral cooperation. The conversation came just after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested that Europe may soon host meetings between him and Russian President Vladimir Putin, indicating renewed diplomatic efforts.

President Stubb provided an assessment of recent meetings with European leaders, the United States, and Ukraine, emphasising discussions on potential steps towards peace. PM Modi emphasised India’s ongoing support for dialogue and diplomacy to seek a peaceful resolution and restore peace. He emphasised that India will continue to support real initiatives that will bring lasting peace.

The two leaders also discussed the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, with President Stubb expressing Finland’s support for its early conclusion. In light of escalating global trade issues and tariffs imposed by the United States on Indian exports, the deal is viewed as critical to strengthening India’s economic position.

Beyond trade, PM Modi and Stubb discussed advancements in India-Finland relations in cutting-edge fields like AI, 6G, quantum technologies, cybersecurity, and sustainability. Stubb also pledged assistance for India’s AI Impact Summit in 2026, highlighting the two countries’ growing technological partnership.
