The UAE has emphasised the essential role of women in peacebuilding during a United Nations Security Council debate. UAE Ambassador to the United Nations Mohamed Abushahab addressed the council, urging early conflict resolution and the participation of women in peace talks. He encouraged stricter adherence to international humanitarian law as conflicts escalated worldwide.
Speaking during the debate on multilateralism and peaceful dispute resolution, Abushahab emphasised the need for practical measures to strengthen peace and security. He emphasised the importance of including women, youth, and community leaders in peace negotiations to achieve long-term success.
Abushahab emphasised that when women participate in discussions, peace agreements are 35% more likely to last. He claimed that inclusive peacebuilding results in more resilient and sustainable outcomes. Stressing the importance of prevention, he urged the international community to improve early warning systems.
Abushahab suggested employing underutilised measures, such as Article 34 of the UN Charter, to probe threats before they escalate. He noted Security Council Resolution 2686, co-authored by the UAE and the UK, as crucial in detecting early symptoms of conflict, such as extremism and hate speech.
