The United States and Thailand have officially implemented their Agreement for Cooperation Concerning Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy, widely known as the 123 Agreement. This is a big step towards increasing civil nuclear cooperation between the two countries. The arrangement is consistent with the US administration’s broader goals of deploying advanced nuclear reactor technologies for national security while improving energy security under strict nonproliferation commitments.
The agreement allows both countries to trade nuclear materials, reactors, equipment, components, and technical information to help civil nuclear research and the development of nuclear energy in Thailand. Civil nuclear power is increasingly seen as a dependable and domestically produced energy source that improves energy security while promoting economic growth. The deal is anticipated to increase energy cooperation while strengthening the US-Thailand diplomatic and economic partnership.
Furthermore, the agreement will make it easier for the US nuclear industry to engage with Thai partners, promoting the deployment of advanced nuclear technology to assist Thailand in meeting its energy targets.
This collaboration is also expected to provide employment possibilities in both countries. The United States expressed its commitment to establishing a strong civil nuclear energy collaboration with Thailand and strengthening their shared energy future through peaceful nuclear initiatives.
