Forty-six years after the iconic “Miracle on Ice” at the 1980 Winter Olympics, the United States produced another chapter of Olympic magic, defeating Canada 2-1 in overtime to win men’s ice hockey gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics on Sunday, 22 February 2026. The victory marks America’s third Olympic gold in men’s hockey, and its first since Lake Placid.
Jack Hughes was the hero, scoring the golden goal in overtime to seal the triumph. The New Jersey Devils forward, grinning with a missing tooth, deflected praise. “It doesn’t matter about the goal. Just an unbelievable team win,” he said. “We’re so proud to win for our country.”
Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets was immense, stopping 41 shots in a performance Hughes called “our best by a mile.”
The Hughes family had a tournament to remember: Quinn Hughes netted an overtime winner in the quarter-finals, while their mother, Ellen, celebrated as the U.S. women also claimed gold.
