Malaysia, Timor-Leste Eye Greater Economic and Educational Collaboration

Malaysia and Timor-Leste explore opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation across trade, education, technical training and human capital development sectors, as both countries seek to strengthen their partnership.

The discussions between Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta in Putrajaya focused on expanding collaboration in areas that can support long-term economic growth and social development.

According to Anwar, strengthening human capital development through education, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and capacity-building programmes are crucial. He noted that Malaysia is committed to supporting Timor-Leste’s development priorities and creating opportunities for future generations.

The Malaysian Prime Minister also emphasised the strong historical relationship between the two countries and shared values of solidarity, mutual respect and regional cooperation.

Economic ties between the two countries have also shown stable growth. Malaysia is among Timor-Leste’s key trading partners within ASEAN, with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$18.7 million in 2024. Malaysia’s exports accounted for US$17.7 million, while imports stood at around US$330,000.

The meeting underscored the commitment of both countries to further strengthen cooperation in trade, education and development while reinforcing their partnership within the ASEAN region.
