Egypt has unveiled the Octagon, a vast new world’s largest military headquarters that has surpassed the Pentagon to become the world’s largest defence headquarters.
Located within Egypt’s New Administrative Capital, around 45 kilometres east of Cairo, the 22,000-acre Octagon serves as the headquarters of the Egyptian Strategic Command. The sprawling complex forms a key part of the country’s broader military modernisation programme.
Designed as a highly integrated defence command centre, the Octagon comprises headquarters, all major branches of the Egyptian Armed Forces, including the army, navy, air force, and air defence. The facility features command-and-control centres, training infrastructure, administrative buildings, and logistical support facilities.
According to reports, the project cost approximately $4.1 billion, with construction carried out as part of the development of Egypt’s new capital.
Unlike the Pentagon, which occupies around 6.5 million square feet across five sides, the Octagon extends over a significantly larger footprint, making it one of the largest military complexes ever constructed.
The new headquarters is intended to strengthen Egypt’s armed forces coordination while enhancing command capabilities through modern communications, surveillance, and operational infrastructure.
The unveiling reflects Egypt’s consistent investment in defence and strategic infrastructure as it expands the role of the New Administrative Capital, which is being developed to house key government institutions and national agencies.
