New Work Visa Rules For Foreign Domestic Workers: Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has introduced stricter regulations for issuing visas for the recruitment of domestic workers from abroad. The Musaned recruitment platform, designed to streamline the domestic labor market, has outlined key criteria for employers seeking to bring in overseas domestic help. Under the new regulations, the minimum age for an individual employer to secure a visa for domestic workers has been set at 24 years.

Under these rules, Saudi citizens, Gulf nationals, foreign wives of Saudi men, their mothers, and holders of Saudi premium residency permits can apply for visas to hire overseas domestic labor. However, the approval is contingent upon the financial capabilities of the employers. These rules were implemented to control the domestic labor market.

The Musaned platform plays a pivotal role in facilitating these transactions, offering a seamless process for wage transfers through digital platforms like STC Pay and Urpay apps. Notably, the platform provides additional services such as the transfer of a house worker’s service between employers, validation of domestic labor contracts, and resolution of disputes. Various categories of domestic workers, including housekeepers, drivers, housemaids, cleaners, cooks, guards, farmers, tailors, live-in nurses, tutors, and nannies, are covered under these regulations.

As the official recruitment channel for domestic labor in the country, Musaned aims to bring transparency and efficiency to the recruitment process, ensuring the rights of both employers and domestic workers.

“And importantly, this (first) batch of Agniveers includes 272 female Agniveer trainees as well…And going further, the second batch of Agniveers had a total of 454 women and I want to say that with the third batch, which has just been inducted, we have now crossed over 1000 women affiliates in the navy,” Admiral Kumar said.

Addressing a press conference ahead of Navy Day, Admiral Kumar said the Indian Navy’s ships, submarines, and aircraft have sustained a high operational tempo in the strategic waters in the last one year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Proposes India To Host COP33 in 2028

At the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed that India host the 33rd Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP 33) in 2028. Speaking during the opening ceremony’s high-level segment, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to the UN Framework for Climate Change process.

“India is committed to the UN Framework for Climate Change process. That is why, from this stage, I propose to host the COP33 Summit in India in 2028,” expressed Prime Minister Modi, making a significant commitment to addressing global climate concerns.

Asserting that the world does not have much time to correct the mistakes of the last century, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a ‘Green Credit Initiative’ focused on creating carbon sinks through people’s participation. The Green Credit programme is independent of the carbon credit under the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, 2023. Thailand Allows Bars & Clubs To Stay Open Longer To Boost Its Economy

In a bid to draw in more tourists, Thailand’s cabinet has approved a ministerial regulation that extends the opening hours of nightclubs and entertainment venues in key tourist hotspots. This latest initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to attract more visitors and boost economic growth.

Under the new regulation, entertainment establishments, including clubs, karaoke bars and other venues in popular tourist destinations such as Phuket, Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, and Samui will now be permitted to stay open for an additional two hours. Thereby extending their opening hours until 4 AM.

Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin had previously said the new rules would start on December 15.

Recognizing the tourism industry as a vital economic driver, particularly in the face of sluggish economic growth, the Thai government has been implementing various measures to rekindle interest from international travelers. One such initiative was the decision in September to waive visa requirements for Chinese visitors, a move intended to bolster tourism, given the significance of Chinese tourists to Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy.

According to current tourism statistics, Thailand has welcomed 24.5 million foreign tourists this year, with a projected total of 28 million by the end of the year. Despite these positive numbers, the figures still fall short of the pre-pandemic peak in 2019 when Thailand recorded a staggering 39.9 million tourists.

India, US To Launch Nisar In 2024

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) are gearing up to launch the NISAR satellite in the first quarter of 2024.

The announcement comes after a high-profile meeting between a NASA delegation, led by administrator Bill Nelson, and India’s Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh.

NISAR is a low earth orbit observatory being jointly developed by NASA and ISRO to map the entire globe in 12 days and provide data for understanding changes in Earth and its climate. The satellite is expected to be worth nearly $1 billion.

During the meeting, Administrator Bill Nelson expressed NASA’s openness to supporting India in building its own space station, thereby deepening the collaboration between the two space agencies. The United States and India are actively working on plans to send an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station by the close of 2024.

“We expect by that time to have a commercial space station. I think India wants to have a commercial space station by 2040. If India wants us to collaborate with them, of course, we will be available. But that’s up to India,” Nelson said.

Dhiraj first ousted Sadegh Ashrafi Bavili of Iran 6-0 (28-27, 28-25, 28-27) in the quarterfinal, then in the semi-final he knocked out another Iranian Mohammadhossein Golshani 6-0 (30-27, 29-25, 29-27). In a nail-biting encounter that went down to a shoot-off, Dhiraj ultimately settled for the silver medal after a 6-5 defeat (10-9). Despite the narrow loss, his exceptional performance secured India’s first Paris Olympics quota in archery.

Dhiraj remarked, “I’m extremely happy that I sealed this quota for the country,” Dhiraj said from Bangkok. “It was a long wait. We couldn’t get the quota at the World Championships, Asian Games and the Asian Championships. This was the last chance for qualifying this year, so I gave it my all today.”

Earlier in the day, Lin blanked veteran Indian archer Tarundeep Rai 6-0 in the quarterfinal before getting the better of Hong Kong’s Kwok Yin Chai 6-4 in the five-set thrilling semi-final.

World’s First Transatlantic Flight Fuelled By Cooking Oil Takes Off

One of Virgin Atlantic’s Boeing 787s took off for the world’s first 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) flight from London’s Heathrow to New York’s John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport. This milestone comes as a pivotal moment in the airline’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

The fuel used to power the flight is mostly made from used cooking oil and waste animal fat mixed with a small amount of synthetic aromatic kerosene made from waste corn, Virgin Atlantic said. UK’s Transport Secretary travelled on the flight alongside Virgin Atlantic’s Chief Executive Shai Weiss and Virgin’s founder, Sir Richard Branson, making the carrier the first commercial airline to fly across the Atlantic without the use of any fossil-based jet fuel.

SAF is recognized as a key element in the aviation industry’s efforts to curb carbon emissions. However, the cost of SAF production stands at three to five times that of regular jet fuel, presenting a financial challenge for widespread adoption within the aviation sector.

Current regulations prohibit airlines from using a blend of more than 50% SAF on commercial flights, as engine manufacturers and aviation authorities work together to ensure that these new fuels are safe to use in higher concentrations. To execute the flight, a special permit was issued by the UK Civil Aviation Authority, which came after a series of technical reviews including ground tests with 100% SAF on the same type of engines used during the flight.

The industry hopes that the Virgin flight will highlight to governments the need for them to provide financial support to make SAF more readily available.
