Bihar’s Makhana Enters China Market with Five-Tonne Export Boost

In a significant boost to Bihar’s agri-exports, five tonnes of premium Mithila makhana have been shipped to a Chinese company, opening a new chapter in the state’s global trade footprint. The consignment was dispatched through the International Cooperative Development Council in Patna and flagged off by Agriculture Minister Ram Kripal Yadav. Officials termed it a proud milestone for farmers and fishermen across north Bihar, where makhana is traditionally cultivated in ponds and wetlands.

The export was facilitated by the Bihar State Fishermen’s Cooperative Federation (COFFED), which represents over 880 cooperative societies. Managing Director Rishikesh Kashyap said the shipment reflects the superior quality and dedication of Bihar’s makhana growers, adding that efforts are underway to scale up exports with private sector support.

Bihar’s makhana already reaches markets such as the United States, Australia, Canada, the UAE, Belgium, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, with 50–60 containers shipped monthly. Exports are projected to touch 30,000 tonnes this year amid rising global demand for the nutrient-rich “superfood.” Officials say expanding exports will improve farmer incomes, generate rural jobs, and position Bihar as a leading global hub for makhana production.
