Ravi B. Goyal

Starting his professional journey as a service engineer in DCM Computers and Byte System, Ravi “realized how fast technology was evolving and the potential it had.” Describing his growth saga, he elaborates, “I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey back in 1992 by setting up a proprietorship concern Advanced Graphic Systems. We were the pioneers in computer-aided textile designing software. Subsequently, I established AGS Transact Technologies Limited (earlier known as AGS InfoTech Private Ltd.) in 2002 and forayed into the payment technology space.”

Taking pride in his achievements, he says, “It has been a satisfying journey so far. I am glad that we have been enabling transactions across sectors and simplifying everyday lives of people for the past 25 years.”

Ravi has been instrumental in introducing services of global giants like Fast & Fluid Management (Netherlands), Diebold-Nixdorf (earlier Wincor Nixdorf, Germany) and ACI Worldwide (US). Under his leadership, the company has clocked a revenue of INR 18,057.42mn from operations as on March 31, 2019 and processed approx. 936.83 mn switching transactions in FY 19. By virtue of his quintessential leadership, the company has installed and maintained/managed approx. 72,000 ATMs for leading banks. It has also installed approx. 40,000 cash billing terminals at large retail stores and approx. 1,40,000 merchant POS terminals across big and small retailers. It has supplied approx. 72,400 colour dispensing machines for leading paint companies and automated approx. 11000 petroleum outlets for leading oil companies.

Leadership is not only about holding a position of eminence; it’s much more than that. A true leader is someone who listens without being condescending and has a vision and passion to make things happen. As an incisive, passionate and revolutionary leader, Ravi has gained the admiration of both his principals and clients for being an inspirational personality, capable of delivering the unthinkable.

Throwing light upon his leadership style, Ravi reminisces, “I started with very few employees, who are still a part of the AGS family in different roles. I believe that every employee has his/her own leadership style and it is important to give them a certain level of freedom to drive the business and also grow and experiment. Technology is at the core of the AGS Group’s foundation. It is evolving at a faster pace than ever, and so are we. We are always looking for individuals who have the zeal to grow along with the organization. Many business heads have stayed with us for more than a decade.”

According to Ravi, “‘Motivation’ is an essential characteristic of a good leader. A self-motivated leader will have a better chance of driving the business successfully. Motivated employees can bring exceptional results for a team/company. Also, in some cases, it can also help an organization or a team sail through tough times.”

Ravi is a leader who believes in evolving consistently and enriching himself with new knowledge and experiences. Sharing his views on growing and developing as a leader continuously, he says, “In my professional journey of 25+ years, one principle that I have stood by is that learning is a continuous process and there is always something new to learn. I stay abreast of the new trends and technology around the world which may have an impact on our ecosystem.”

Talking about the person who had a tremendous impact on him as a leader, he says, “I idolize my grandfather, Shri Kunjbihariji S. Goyal, from whom I have learnt the most important life lessons that press upon hard-work and honesty. These two attributes are also embedded in the vision of AGS Transact Technologies Limited (AGSTTL).”

CREATING A HOLISTIC EMPLOYEE EXPERIENCE

Being well aware of the fact that employees are the foundation of an organization and their everyday experiences are key to its success, Ravi has always focused on providing a better employee experience. He is of the view that when companies address their employees’ experience, from the front line to the corner office, it improves their quality of life and builds mutual trust and loyalty. He righty asserts, “We encourage employees to grow personally and professionally. In addition to the growth within a specific business vertical, we also support lateral movement if desired by the employee. While this helps the employee develop more than one business skill, it also provides the company with fresh insights from the employees.” He further adds, “Every employee is free to approach their respective business heads directly and in some cases even me if required.”

RADIATING OPTIMISM

An innate optimist, Ravi believes that every challenge is an opportunity to perform with renewed vigour. He is of the view that “Opportunities and growth go hand in hand. Businesses are formed when you are willing to explore an opportunity at the right time. And great businesses are formed when you are willing to take risks associated with that opportunity at any given point of time. I firmly believe that technology has the power to transform every sector and industry and for doing so, I have never hesitated in taking ‘calculated risks’ to explore new business ideas and stay ahead of the curve.”

His advice for young, upcoming leaders is to be dedicated, diligent and preserve their integrity in all situations. He emphasizes, “To all youngsters moving away from their comfort zone to build their own businesses; my advice to you is to have a vision, to believe in a value system and to never compromise on hard work.”

He adds, “No two individuals are identical, their educational qualification can be the same but their attitude, experience, adaptability, communication and soft skills will vary.” When given a chance to select an employee among two equally-qualified candidates, he would select the candidate on the afore stated factors. Stressing upon the significance of ethics in business, he asserts, “Honesty and hard work are the virtues of AGS Group. I hope the company will continue to grow by leaps and bounds while keeping its legacy intact.”

Safwan Sobhan Tasvir

Fascinated by machinery and equipment since childhood, Mr. Safwan Sobhan Tasvir was keen on pursuing engineering as a kid. However, what inspired him more was the great business acumen, his father Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, the founder of Bashundhara Group held, and he went on to study business to take the lineage forward.

Since its inception in 1987, Bashundhara Group had diversified into a number of industries other than the pioneering real estate venture in front of Mr. Tasvir’s eyes. It was the first private sector company to introduce the large scale paper mill in Bangladesh and was getting diversified into several other enterprises including cement mills, shipping lines, steel complexes, food & beverages, media and trading companies. All this inspired the youngest of the four sons of Mr. Ahmed Akbar Sobhan to join the force.

Today, he is the Vice-Chairperson of the Group and has overlooked further diversification of the business in spaces like technology and media. He says that everything that he is today is because of his inspirational father. Mr. Ahmed Akbar Sobhan reckons the invaluable support and guidance that his father has extended towards him have helped him a strong leader.

CONTRIBUTING TO LOCAL ECONOMY

While Mr. Safwan Sobhan Tasvir was born in Bangladesh, he spent his growing years in the United Kingdom. He completed his schooling from Shiplake College Oxfordshire and further attained his graduate degree in Business Studies (Management) from American InterContinental University before moving back to his home country and supporting his family in running Bashundhara Group and its many daughter companies.

As a business leader, his focus remains on opportunity-creation for the nation. He seeks a holistic business growth that is equally beneficial for group partners and the whole Bangladeshi economy. The key to achieving this is the constant innovation he motivates his team to indulge in. Under his astute leadership, the Group keeps on trying to remodel itself on a regular basis and stay updated with the recent trends to remain competitive in the business arena.

The new investments are filtered through an import-substitute lens. They look within the country and its industries with the help of a dedicated research team and sign up contracts with local players. The research and development department also helps the group in producing certain material in-house as well. For example, the Group has recently started production its own Bitumin plant, which will cater to the growing demand of the Bangladeshi infrastructure industry, while saving a lot of foreign currency.

For his outstanding contribution to the commercial sector, Mr. Tasvir has been recognized as a ‘Commercially Important Person’ (CIP) by the Bangladesh government. He got the reward for his work in the largescale industry sector.

Mr. Safwan Sobhan Tasvir is known for his well-mannered and down-to-earth personality. He always greets people with a warm smile and maintains a good social rapport. His penchant to learn new things and contribute to meaningful conversations make him a pleasant personality to be around.

A father of two, Mr. Tasvir also dedicates the much required time to his family as well. His busy schedule never deters him from spending quality moments with his wife and his kids. He has struck a beautiful balance between his personal and professional life and inspires his employees to do the same.

He also makes sure that he gets enough time out for his hobby of sports as well. He is born into a family of sportspersons, which includes legendary hockey player Abdus Sadque, who is his uncle. Even Mr. Tasvir’s father and the founder of Bashundhara Group was a champion at many sports. Mr. Tasvir plays sports like cricket, golf, tennis, and squash.

He was also made the President of Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Sports Club in 2017. He is also the proud owner of the BPL (Bangladesh Premier League) franchise ‘Rangpur Riders’, the champion team of 2017 tournament.

Mr. Tasvir is also an amateur aviator and takes a keen interest in the game of golf, which he has been playing since he was twelve. He has also been working on creating a private golf course for Bashundhara Group to promote the sport. He is also very passionate about promoting local golf & its players and has been sponsoring them for various leagues. His undying spirit towards the sports makes him a popular name among the young sports enthusiasts as well.

BALANCING TRADE & RESPONSIBILITIES

Mr. Safwan Sobhan Tasvir believes that with great success comes great responsibilities and therefore takes a personal interest in all the CSR activities of Bashundhara Group. The group has been helping a lot of people in need with its extensive support programme, which includes services like free eye checkups, cheap medical care, a special children foundation for autistic and underprivileged kids, and an orphanage among others. His philanthropic efforts are also extended to people in distress who do not have enough resources to deal with harsh winters. Mr. Tasvir’s business acumen and his amiable personal side make him a leader par excellence. He has made not just his family but the entire country proud of his achievements. He is today one of the biggest names in the Asian business circuit & has gained a lot of respect from his counterparts for his honest efforts to grow the local business. But he is not resting here. Sanjay Shah

The Founder, CEO and Chief Architect of enterprise software company Vistex, Sanjay Shah is a global businessman who has bootstrapped the company from its conception to its current role as a vital partner to worldwide titans like Apple, Walmart, 3M, Turner, Dell and Bayer. Under his leadership, Vistex provides software and services to help businesses take their products and services to the marketplace with state-of-the-art, goto-market programs and helps firms increase revenue and reduce costs with their business partners by managing trade, channel and vendor programs, pricing, performance incentives and rights and royalties.

THE SAGA OF SUCCESS

An Indian immigrant, Shah left Mumbai, India, to attend Lehigh University’s business school, earning his MBA at the young age of 21. As he puts it, “My story began in Mumbai. I lived in a close-knit community with my immediate and extended family, all living within a one-mile radius. I left Mumbai because I was searching for more. I wanted to go to a business school, and the U.S. was the logical choice.”

Earlier in his career, he held positions at high-profile companies like PricewaterhouseCoopers and General Motors before moving to Germany to work for software giant SAP. He elaborates, “After attending Lehigh University’s business school and earning my MBA in finance in 1989 at the age of 21, I took an accounting job at PricewaterhouseCoopers as an auditor. I was there for 6 months before deciding that it wasn’t the right path for me.” Sharing his experiences at General Motors, he says, “I wanted to get some operational experience in supply chain; however, my background and degree in finance weren’t quite the areas potential employers had in mind. I eventually found my way to General Motors and moved to Canada for that role. During my 2.5 years there, I learned how things were built on the shop floor, how products are put together, and the logistics and distribution networks of large companies.”

The turning point in his career was his association with SAP, which eventually played a significant role in shaping his career as an entrepreneur. He delineates, “I first came to SAP as they were expanding into North America because I was initially intrigued by their software work. I was with SAP for 6 years and called myself a company loyalist. Since I was so passionate about SAP, I presented a few ideas to the development management team as a way to enhance the functionality of their products. Although SAP liked the ideas, they said I had to develop them in Germany with their R&D team, and since I wanted to move my family back to the U.S., I decided to develop this product on my own. SAP agreed to support me by bringing it to market. I would like to say I became an ‘entrepreneur by accident,’ as it was never my intention to leave SAP.”

Driven by the spirit of innovation, Shah left SAP to develop an entirely new category of software, known as Go-to-Market programs. He says, “My day job became developing this software while also consulting on behalf of SAP. I had become a marketable resource to SAP by initiating and spearheading a program to support troubled customers.” Thus, the seeds of Vistex were sown in the year 1999. As he himself puts it, “My first year was 1999 and I was focused on writing software that met the needs of business functions not adequately addressed in ERP systems. I made my first hires in 2000 to help me engineer the software, and I’m proud to still have those employees working at Vistex. In 2001, we landed our first customer and also began expanding.”

Talking about his journey as an entrepreneur, Shah asserts, “Since our early days, we have continued to grow and create a business model monetized by licensing, software, annual maintenance and providing professional services to implement software. We now work with the biggest names in the business, such as Apple, Walmart, 3M, Turner, Dell and Bayer. We are a worldwide operation with 21 offices, 1,600+ employees and nearly $250 million in revenue in 2018, all without external funding.”

He declares with pride, “Our year-afteryear revenue growth can be attributed to the fact that we deliver value to customers. We have been successful in forging into new industries, upselling our current clients and expanding our customer footprint.” He further elaborates, “Earlier this year, Vistex achieved a new growth milestone – the first equity capital raise in our company’s history.

This set a new precedent for an enterprise software company to grow to a size and scale like Vistex without any external capital, and was an accomplishment I’m quite proud of. This capital investment supports a variety of company priorities and aggressive growth plans, including talent acquisition in sales, marketing and software engineering roles, and will help us grow globally.”

HAILING LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL

The road to success for Shah was not an easy one, and was certainly laden with challenges. Sharing some of the specific challenges that he faced and the ways in which he overcame them, he says, “In the early days, we faced challenges in being a cost-conscientious company and had our engineers handle sales, rather than creating a sales or marketing division. Since there wasn’t any venture funding to propel us into the market in a flashy way, we were forced to be thoughtful in our partnerships, which is why SAP has been instrumental to our success. Partnering with SAP has propelled our ability to take our products to market.”

RADIATING GOODNESS

Shah’s greatest treasure is his heart of gold. As an individual who is inclined towards social responsibility, he asserts, “I know the importance of giving back. As part of Vistex’s corporate social responsibility initiatives, I formed the Vistex Foundation to focus on poverty, education, health and humanitarian issues in the Chicago area and around the globe. Projects have included food drives, programs for inner-city children and the construction of a birthing centre in Sierra Leone, all of which are supported by Vistex employees. A Vistex Hospital also opened this year in Bihar, India.” He can be best described as an epitome of selflessness when he declares, “I’m proud to pair the growth of Vistex and my success with causes that establish positive opportunities for others.”

CHERISHING ACCOMPLISHMENTS

A multitalented personality, Shah feels “privileged enough to pursue interests outside of my [his] career.” He worked hard to get his “pilot’s license,” enjoyed “going back to school to obtain a CPA,” and taught himself “how to speak German and write complex software code.” Expressing his gratitude for having an excellent support system, he adds, “These passions, paired with my family’s unwavering support, have been incredible. When my wife was pregnant with our second child, she stood by my side as I ventured into building my own software and career.”

Shah’s outstanding contribution to the sphere of business and technology has been recognised at various forums. He has received accolades and awards throughout his career, such as the EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2019 and Illinois Technology Association’s City Light CEO of the Year.

A self-made man, Shah is an inspiration for the young generation. His message to the youth is, “If I could go back and give my younger self advice, it would be to not follow any advice. There are many paths to success, and you should draw inspiration from those you admire, but not be caught up in replication of their triumphs.”

Her decision to bring about some trend-setting Hygiene-care products has turned today’s Bangladeshi baby-care market into one of the most promising business areas. She took the lead to introduce first-ever Bangladeshi origin pant-style Diaper brand “Bashundhara Diapant” in 2017 which has proven as one of the successful steps as it is the leading brand already in the domestic market. In short, she has become one of the role models in Bangladeshi Business Arena.

In 2016, she took the lead to bring ‘Baba Rafi – Kebab Turki’ Restaurant franchise in Bangladesh from Indonesia and now the Restaurant chain named “BabaRafi Bangladesh” has earned substantial fame for its quality food item and unique presentation style. At the same time, “FOOD STREET”, a pure local food restaurant-chain was launched in Dhaka and soon has become one of the top hangout places for young food-lovers. Dr. Karan Thakur

With an invaluable experience of 15 years in the healthcare sector, Dr. Thakur has been leading the way by imparting excellence and innovation in the healthcare industry. His analytical and strategic ideology and a great deal of knowledge of the industry have aided him on his journey. An erudite medical entrepreneur, Dr. Thakur is a qualified dental surgeon with a master in healthcare management from the well-known Manchester Business School, University of Manchester. He also received executive management training from the reputed Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.
