The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced plans to construct 23 pedestrian and cyclist bridges across the city by the end of 2030 as part of its efforts to improve safety and promote sustainable transportation. The Al Shindagha Corridor Project has already completed two new pedestrian bridges, on Sheikh Rashid Street and Al Mina Street, respectively.
Five more bridges are expected to open before the end of the year, including those on Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Al Manara Street in Al Quoz Creative Zone, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Dubai-Al Ain Road. Another bridge on Al Sukook Street is planned for completion in early 2027.
By 2028, nine more bridges will be constructed, including one at Coca-Cola Arena, another in Business Bay, one on Sheikh Zayed Road near the Burj Khalifa, and six on Al Asayel Street.
Each bridge is equipped with firefighting systems, remote monitoring, and safety features. Some include bike racks and designated cycling pathways.
RTA Director General Mattar Al Tayer noted that pedestrian fatalities have decreased by 97% since 2007, with foot and bicycle trips increasing year-on-year, indicating a trend towards greener urban mobility.
