Goa is set to take a major step in its electric vehicle (EV) transition, with plans to make Panaji Smart City, airports, railway stations, tourism attractions, and heritage sites mandatory EV zones. This plan is part of NITI Aayog’s Electric Mobility Index 2024 (IEMI), which tracks EV adoption across states and union territories.
According to the report, the Goa government plans to gradually convert all government-owned vehicles, ferries, ambulances, PCR vans, school buses, and state-run public buses to electric vehicles. Priority will also be given to issuing licenses for tourist taxis and new vehicles in the state that are EVs, promoting a greener transportation network.
Goa has been ranked second in terms of overall EV adoption in India, with an impressive 13.6% adoption rate in 2024. The state has the highest private EV adoption rate in the country, with a perfect score of 100, matching Karnataka, Kerala, and Maharashtra. However, commercial EV adoption remains low, with Goa ranking at 28th.
NITI Aayog recommended that the state provide capital subsidies, concessional land for public charging stations, and introduce e-mobility courses across ITIs to build a skilled workforce.
