GPT-5.6 Debuts With ChatGPT Work as OpenAI Expands AI Workplace Tools

OpenAI has launched GPT-5.6 alongside ChatGPT Work, its newest AI-powered workspace designed to help businesses complete complex tasks such as coding, research, document creation, presentations, and website building from a single platform.

The launch marks OpenAI’s biggest step yet towards positioning ChatGPT as a workplace productivity platform rather than just a conversational chatbot. The GPT-5.6 family includes Sol, Terra, and Luna, 3 tools that allow users to choose among advanced performance, lower cost, and faster responses based on their requirements.

ChatGPT Work combines ChatGPT with Codex, OpenAI’s AI coding system, enabling users to automate workflows, analyse datasets, generate reports, build software, and publish websites without switching between multiple applications. The platform also integrates with enterprise services, including Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and customer relationship management (CRM) tools.

OpenAI has also introduced configurable reasoning levels for GPT-5.6, allowing users to control how much computational effort the model applies to a task. Higher reasoning modes, including an Ultra setting, are initially available to Pro and Enterprise subscribers.

The GPT-5.6 rollout has already begun across ChatGPT, Codex, and the OpenAI API. Developers will also gain access to new features, including multi-agent support and improved tool calling. According to OpenAI, GPT-5.6 now powers Microsoft 365 Copilot, highlighting its growing role in enterprise AI applications.

The launch comes as competition intensifies among AI companies like Anthropic, Google, and Microsoft, with businesses increasingly adopting AI agents capable of handling complex workplace tasks beyond traditional chat-based interactions.
