Health Experts Back PM Modi’s Warning on Rising Antibiotic Resistance

Health experts across India applauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strong message on antibiotic overuse, given on the final broadcast of this year’s Mann Ki Baat radio programme. PM Modi warned that using antibiotics without proper medical supervision reduces their efficacy and poses major health risks, particularly in cases of pneumonia and urinary tract infections. He emphasised that medicines, particularly antibiotics, should only be taken as prescribed by a doctor and not as quick solutions for common ailments.

PM Modi, citing research from the Indian Council of Medical Research, warned that irrational antibiotic use is emerging as a major public health concern as bacteria develop resistance to treatment. He emphasised the common practice of self-medication, stating that many individuals assume that a single tablet will heal all illnesses, which leads to more serious and difficult-to-treat infections.

Medical professionals shared these worries, describing the PM’s involvement as timely and important. Experts say antibiotic resistance is increasing in India, with several hospital and ICU infections no longer responding to existing treatments. They added that antibiotics are frequently used incorrectly for viral infections such as colds and coughs, promoting resistance. Doctors underlined the need for appropriate prescribing procedures and recommended that people seek certified physicians before taking antibiotics.
