Mahit Sandhu emerged as India’s star performer at the 25th Summer Deaflympics in Tokyo, setting a new record in the 50m rifle event and winning gold. His outstanding performance on the shooting ranges helped India make history, as the shooters won 16 of the 39 medals available in the competition. The country’s best-ever showing in Deaflympic shooting resulted in seven gold, six silver, and three bronze medals.
Sandhu won four medals altogether, two gold and two silver, making her the most successful Indian athlete at the event. Abhinav Deshwal and Pranjali Prashant Dhumal, both pistol shooters, added to India’s glory by winning two gold medals and one silver. Dhanush Srikanth also delivered an impressive performance, winning two gold medals in the 10m Air Rifle individual and mixed team events.
Mohammed Murtaza Vania won a silver and a bronze medal, while Komal Milind Waghmare grabbed two bronze medals. Anuya Prasad took gold in the 10m Air Pistol Women’s event. Shourya Saini won silver in the 50m 3 positions, while Kushagra Singh Rajawat took bronze in the 50m rifle prone.
Chetan Hanmant Sapkal finished sixth in the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event, capping India’s strong performance in Tokyo.
