India to Boost Food Exports as Philippines Lifts Basmati Restrictions

India is preparing to expand food exports to the Philippines after Manila decided to liberalise imports from New Delhi, including the removal of restrictions on Basmati rice. The measure is anticipated to improve India’s agricultural exports and provide farmers with better income opportunities.

A delegation of Indian rice exporters will visit the Philippines next month to explore market potential and secure long-term trade agreements. Officials stated that this will open up new opportunities for high-quality rice exports while enhancing agricultural cooperation.

The decision comes after a high-level delegation from the Philippines, led by Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. visited India recently. During talks with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and the Indian Rice Exporters Federation, both sides discussed increasing imports of Indian rice, buffalo meat, fruits and vegetables, and peanuts. Manila agreed to promote Indian suppliers to diversify its food supply, reduce reliance on Chinese imports, and improve food security.

In 2024, India sold agricultural products worth $413 million to the Philippines, accounting for only 2% of its total agricultural imports.

Trade discussions will continue when Philippine food importers participate in World Food India from September 25 to 28 and the International Rice Conference from October 30-31.
