Fátima Bosch Fernández of Mexico won the Miss Universe 2025 crown in Bangkok, sparking celebrations across the country. Her victory came after a tense incident earlier in the competition, which had already landed her in the national limelight. The 25-year-old from Tabasco was publicly scolded by Thai director Nawat Itsaragrisil at a livestreamed sashing ceremony on November 4. He accused her of failing to follow his promotional guidelines. When Bosch defended herself, he called security, prompting her to leave. Several participants joined in to show their support.
Mexican businessman Raúl Rocha Cantú, president of the Miss Universe Organisation, called Nawat’s action abusive. Nawat later made a heartfelt apology. The controversy received considerable coverage in Mexico, notably from President Claudia Sheinbaum. She praised Bosch’s refusal to remain silent, saying her answer mirrored a new era in which Mexican women speak out against injustice.
Many Mexicans expressed this sentiment. Patricia Bustamante, a retiree, praised Bosch’s bravery, noting that past generations were encouraged to remain silent. Nurse Briana González, who usually avoids beauty pageants, saw Bosch’s stance as empowering.
Crowds gathered in Villahermosa, Tabasco, where people claimed she made them proud despite the obstacles she encountered.
