Namibia has made a significant step forward in its clean energy transition with the opening of Africa’s first fully integrated green hydrogen production and refuelling facility. Rt Honourable Prime Minister Dr Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare led the historic occasion on behalf of President Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, which was attended by government leaders, European dignitaries, industry stakeholders, and local citizens.
Cleanergy Solutions Namibia developed the new facility, which is powered by a solar-powered electrolyser and features a hydrogen refuelling station and an on-site Hydrogen Academy to train Namibians in hydrogen technology. Locally produced green hydrogen is already being used in dual-fuel trucks, tractors, and off-grid hydrogen power generation.
PM Ngurare emphasised that the project aligns with Namibia’s Vision 2030, which promises job creation, business growth, and long-term energy independence. He emphasised that the event represented “the beginning of a new chapter in Namibia’s industrial transformation.”
The EU mobilised €1.3 billion in investment under its Global Gateway policy to strengthen Namibia’s green hydrogen sector. The research will soon expand to rail and maritime applications, like hydrogen-powered trains and port vessels.
