Finland Pledges €1 Million to UNDP Core Funding to Strengthen Global SDG Progress

The Finnish government has approved a €1 million contribution in flexible core resources to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for 2025, demonstrating its enduring support for the UN’s development agenda. The funding will enable UNDP to make faster progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and respond quickly to regions facing urgent challenges.

Unlike assigned funding, flexible core resources enable UNDP to allocate funds where they are most needed. This adaptability is crucial during humanitarian emergencies, conflicts, and periods of chronic instability, enabling timely actions to protect vulnerable populations and enhance community resilience. In Ukraine, for example, core funding has supported humanitarian aid, rehabilitation programs, and local governance initiatives, enabling crucial services to continue despite ongoing instability.

Finland has long been seen as a consistent supporter of multilateral cooperation and development financing. Its contribution shows a commitment to global solidarity, gender equality, inclusive governance, climate action, and digital innovation. Finland hopes to mobilise further investment for long-term growth in low- and middle-income countries through its collaboration with the UNDP.

UNDP operates in 170 countries to reduce poverty, promote environmental sustainability, establish peace, and strengthen resilience through voluntary contributions. Finland’s flexible funding ensures that UNDP can act swiftly, scale solutions, and provide long-term outcomes.
