Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated a major exhibition of sacred Piprahwa relics linked to Bhagwan Buddha at the Rai Pithora Cultural Complex in the national capital. Titled, The Light & the Lotus: Relics of the Awakened One, the exhibition brings back relics that were taken out of India over a century ago and were recently repatriated.
Addressing the gathering, Shri Modi said the relics are not just historical objects but a living part of India’s civilisation and spiritual tradition. He said their return after 125 years allows people to see them and receive the blessings of Lord Buddha. Calling the event an auspicious start to 2026, he expressed hope for peace and harmony worldwide.
Shri Modi said the Qila Rai Pithora complex reflects India’s rich past and that the exhibition adds a sacred chapter to its history. He noted that the relics were treated as ordinary antiques abroad, but in India, they are considered sacred. He thanked the Godrej Group for helping ensure their return.
The Prime Minister highlighted the global relevance of Buddha’s teachings and recalled the strong public response to earlier exhibitions held in countries like Thailand and Vietnam. He said India is working to preserve Buddhist heritage, improve pilgrimage facilities, and promote Pali, the original language of Buddha’s teachings.
Several Union Ministers, the Delhi Lieutenant Governor, and other dignitaries attended the event. The exhibition includes relics from Piprahwa and artefacts from national museums, along with digital and audio-visual displays to help visitors understand Buddha’s life and message.
