South Korea, UAE Sign New Deals to Deepen Cooperation in AI and Defense

South Korea and the UAE expanded their partnership by signing a number of new agreements covering artificial intelligence, aerospace, nuclear energy, and economic cooperation. The deals were finalized during President Lee Jae Myung’s visit to Abu Dhabi, where he was welcomed by UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. According to Seoul’s presidential office, the two countries signed seven memorandums of understanding to expand cooperation in advanced technology, defence, and intellectual property.

Both presidents discussed strengthening their strategic connections and identifying long-term opportunities for collaboration. Lee lauded the UAE as a fraternal partner and reaffirmed South Korea’s willingness to work towards what he called a centennial alliance. He highlighted opportunities in security, defence manufacturing, nuclear technology, health care, and medical services, expressing optimism for further progress that will benefit both countries.

Defence cooperation was a major topic, with both sides looking into joint research, manufacture, and prospective exports of weapon systems. Energy discussions also took center stage, particularly the UAE’s intention to boost its crude oil reserves in South Korea from four million barrels to at least ten million barrels. The visit comes after the UAE signed a free trade agreement with South Korea last year, making it the first Middle Eastern nation to do so.
