The West Indies cricket team produced a batting spectacle for the ages, smashing the second-highest team total in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history during their Super 8 clash against the Zimbabwe national cricket team at the Wankhede Stadium in the 2026 edition on Monday.
The Men in Maroon piled up a staggering 254/6 in 20 overs, a tally bettered only by the Sri Lanka national cricket team’s 260/6 against Kenya in the 2007 tournament. It marked just the second time a team crossed the 250-run barrier in T20 World Cup history and the highest total ever recorded against Zimbabwe in T20Is.
After being asked to bat, the West Indies stumbled early as Brandon King and Shai Hope departed inside the powerplay. At 55/2, the innings needed impetus, and Shimron Hetmyer delivered spectacularly. He hammered a 19-ball half-century, the fastest by a West Indian in T20 World Cup history, shifting momentum decisively.
Hetmyer’s explosive 85 off 34 balls, featuring seven fours and seven sixes, powered a 122-run stand with Rovman Powell, who struck a brisk fifty. Late cameos from Romario Shepherd, Jason Holder, and an unbeaten 31 off 13 from Sherfane Rutherford propelled West Indies to a monumental 254/6, equalling the joint-most 19 sixes in a T20 World Cup innings.
