World Indoor Athletics Championship: GB’s Josh Kerr wins gold in the men’s 3000 metres

Brilliance and controversy often go hand in hand for Josh Kerr, and his latest triumph at the world indoor 3,000m event in Toruń was no exception. After clinching victory in a dramatic race, Kerr added flair to his win by mimicking Stephen Curry’s iconic ‘night night’ celebration, aimed squarely at his rival, Cole Hocker. The gesture carried added significance, as Hocker had used the same celebration after defeating Kerr at the Millrose Games earlier this year.

Kerr later admitted that the earlier loss had fueled his motivation, calling this victory the “North Star” compared to Millrose. Hocker, while acknowledging the sting of both defeat and celebration, hinted at future redemption, underscoring the growing rivalry between the two athletes.

The race itself lived up to its billing, featuring top contenders including Yared Nuguse alongside strong Ethiopian challengers. For much of the race, Kerr found himself out of position, trailing behind as the pace was dictated up front. However, as the leaders began to fade, he made a decisive move on the penultimate lap.

Despite a late surge from Hocker, Kerr held on to win in 7:35.56, demonstrating composure under pressure. Reflecting on the race, he admitted concerns about his positioning but credited his ability to stay calm amid the chaos as the key to securing gold.
