UAE Wealth Fund Plans $4–5 Billion In Investments Via India’s New Finance Hub

Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), the UAE’s largest sovereign wealth fund, intends to establish a $4–5 billion investment fund in India through a tax-neutral finance hub in Gujarat. The fund has received preliminary approval from the regulatory authority at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).

India and the UAE jointly made the announcement last July, but specific investment information remains undisclosed.

ADIA’s approval marks a milestone as the first sovereign wealth fund to invest in India via GIFT City, coinciding with PM Modi’s visit to Abu Dhabi. India-UAE trade reached $85 billion in fiscal 2023, with a significant Indian diaspora in the UAE.

ADIA aims to commence investments by mid-year, leveraging GIFT City’s offerings for both Indian and foreign assets. The Modi government seeks to position GIFT City as a premier global financial hub, offering incentives such as tax holidays.

ADIA and its subsidiaries benefit from long-term capital gains tax exemptions on Indian investments until March 2025. Despite a slow start, GIFT City has seen an increase in fund management activity, bringing in $30 billion from 95 funds and more than $2.93 billion invested by December 2023.

IFSCA is in discussions with other sovereign wealth funds for potential operations in GIFT City, signalling further growth opportunities.

India Eyes $100 Billion Investment Deal With Switzerland, Norway

India is on the verge of cementing a substantial trade agreement that could potentially yield investments amounting to $100 billion for 15 years from a select group of European nations.

The European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which is made up of Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein, is said to have made major commitments as part of an approaching trade agreement.

This anticipated investment from EFTA countries in India is poised to generate more than 1 million jobs. It is expected to predominantly target both existing and nascent manufacturing endeavours, with contributions expected from state-sponsored entities and private enterprises.

According to Bloomberg’s findings, the upcoming trade agreement seeks to expedite the flow of Indian specialists to EFTA nations and facilitate market access for specific agricultural efforts.

The Indian Commerce Ministry and EFTA have yet to provide an official comment on the matter.

Notably, Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw disclosed last month that India is actively pursuing an annual Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) influx of $100 billion “in the next few years.” India’s attractiveness as an investment destination has drawn interest from various quarters, including the United Arab Emirates, contemplating potential investments of up to $50 billion in the country.

PM Modi Inaugurates Integrated Sea Survival Training Centre In Goa

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Goa Governor Shreedharan Pillai, and ONGC officials, inaugurated the integrated ONGC Sea Survival Training Centre at Betul. Situated at the expansive ONGC Goa campus of IPSHEM, the centre is India’s deepest training facility, offering lifelike simulations for personnel to evacuate a helicopter cabin in crash scenarios. It is expected to train 10,000–15,000 people personally annually.

Featuring the country’s deepest pool, the facility replicates challenging conditions like mist, waves, darkness, and rain with eight types of waves up to two metres high. Its world-class faculty provides classroom sessions and practical, in-water training with one trainer per individual.

A standout feature is the full-scale simulation of a helicopter cabin submerging into the pool, imitating crash scenarios. Trainees learn to swiftly disengage harnesses, overcome shock, and resurface within minutes.

The Sea Survival Centre, initially designed for ONGC’s safety needs, is open to entities like the Navy, merchant carriers, Coast Guard, OMCs, and international participants. With over 10,000 offshore ONGC personnel, the centre mitigates the risks associated with helicopter travel, ensuring readiness for potential sea crashes.

European Union Set To Recommend Deep C02 Cuts For 2040 Climate Target

On Tuesday, the European Commission is set to unveil its recommendation, advocating for a substantial reduction in the EU’s net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% before 2040. As the EU elections approach, this proposed target emphasises the importance of sustaining Europe’s vigorous fight against climate change.

The Commission’s plan has been strongly endorsed in early drafts, with a 90% reduction objective compared to 1990 levels. The EU’s 2040 aim is a crucial step towards its ultimate goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050, which will end Europe’s contribution to global climate change and bridge the gap between the organisation’s current 2030 climate goal.

Formed amidst widespread protests by farmers throughout the continent and against particular environmental laws imposed by the EU, the EU’s policy emphasises how important it is to maintain popular support and safeguard European industry.

According to a draft of the EU plan, there will be a concerted effort to address the necessary conditions for businesses and citizens to successfully navigate the transition. With China’s green technology sector fiercely competing with traditional industries, Europe’s climate agenda faces a complicated political landscape.

Ivory Coast Reached AFCONs Semi-Final With South Africa

Ivory Coast made a stunning comeback to win Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal, earning a place in the semifinals, where South Africa would later join them.

Oumar Diakite emerged as the star player, netting a remarkable backheel in added time, sealing a thrilling 2-1 win over Mali. He initially took the lead through Nene Dorgeles. Despite Odilon Kossounou’s red card reducing Ivory Coast to 10 men, Simon Adingra equalised in the 90th minute, pushing the game into extra time. Diakite’s decisive strike in extra time clinched victory but earned him a red card for removing his shirt in celebration.

However, Ivory Coast faces setbacks as suspensions sideline key players including Diakite, Kossounou, Serge Aurier, and Christian Kouame for the upcoming semifinal against the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The last time Ivory Coast reached the semifinals was in 2015, winning the tournament for the second time after defeating DR Congo 3-1.

Despite difficulties, Ivory Coast has persevered throughout this competition, narrowly making it to the knockout round and defeating host Senegal in a tense match. Mali’s missed opportunities, including Adama ‘Noss’ Traore’s saved penalty, added to their defeat. Post-match, the Malian team faced potential disciplinary actions for confrontations with the referee.

This signing underscores South Korea’s commitment to expanding its defence partnerships and capitalising on opportunities in the global arms market.
