European Union Set To Recommend Deep C02 Cuts For 2040 Climate Target

On Tuesday, the European Commission is set to unveil its recommendation, advocating for a substantial reduction in the EU’s net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% before 2040. As the EU elections approach, this proposed target emphasises the importance of sustaining Europe’s vigorous fight against climate change.

The Commission’s plan has been strongly endorsed in early drafts, with a 90% reduction objective compared to 1990 levels. The EU’s 2040 aim is a crucial step towards its ultimate goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050, which will end Europe’s contribution to global climate change and bridge the gap between the organisation’s current 2030 climate goal.

Formed amidst widespread protests by farmers throughout the continent and against particular environmental laws imposed by the EU, the EU’s policy emphasises how important it is to maintain popular support and safeguard European industry.

According to a draft of the EU plan, there will be a concerted effort to address the necessary conditions for businesses and citizens to successfully navigate the transition. With China’s green technology sector fiercely competing with traditional industries, Europe’s climate agenda faces a complicated political landscape.

Ivory Coast Reached AFCONs Semi-Final With South Africa

Ivory Coast made a stunning comeback to win Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal, earning a place in the semifinals, where South Africa would later join them.

Oumar Diakite emerged as the star player, netting a remarkable backheel in added time, sealing a thrilling 2-1 win over Mali. He initially took the lead through Nene Dorgeles. Despite Odilon Kossounou’s red card reducing Ivory Coast to 10 men, Simon Adingra equalised in the 90th minute, pushing the game into extra time. Diakite’s decisive strike in extra time clinched victory but earned him a red card for removing his shirt in celebration.

However, Ivory Coast faces setbacks as suspensions sideline key players including Diakite, Kossounou, Serge Aurier, and Christian Kouame for the upcoming semifinal against the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The last time Ivory Coast reached the semifinals was in 2015, winning the tournament for the second time after defeating DR Congo 3-1.

Despite difficulties, Ivory Coast has persevered throughout this competition, narrowly making it to the knockout round and defeating host Senegal in a tense match. Mali’s missed opportunities, including Adama ‘Noss’ Traore’s saved penalty, added to their defeat. Post-match, the Malian team faced potential disciplinary actions for confrontations with the referee.

NZ Eyes AUKUS Pillar Two As Pacific Security Concerns Grow

New Zealand has agreed to formally investigate the possible benefits of joining the Aukus deal. This move indicates Wellington’s willingness in the security accord primarily intended to oppose China.

Foreign affairs and defence ministers of both nations affirmed that Australia will send delegations to NZ to discuss pillar two of Aukus. It will focus on collaboration in strategically sensitive domains such as quantum computing and AI.

Judith Collins, NZ’s defence minister, remarked at a joint news conference that Australian officials have been tasked with collaborating with their New Zealand counterparts to explore the opportunities presented by Aukus Two for New Zealand. It particularly emphasises the vast prospects available for its space and technology sectors.

Signed in September 2021, the Aukus pact has primarily garnered attention for its first pillar, wherein London and Washington pledged assistance to Canberra in establishing its fleet of nuclear-powered submarines by the 2040s. Notably, NZ, which maintains a nuclear-free policy, is solely interested in pillar two. Last year, the multibillion-dollar plan for the new fleet of submarines aimed at navigating the Pacific to counteract China’s escalating assertiveness in the South China Sea and surrounding Taiwan.

Meanwhile, China accused Australia of becoming a nuclear threat and Aukus would “harm the peace and stability in the region.”

Born on November 8, 1927, in Karachi, Pakistan, Advani has held the position of BJP President since 1980. He served as Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister under Vajpayee’s leadership (1999–2004), concluding a nearly three-decade parliamentary tenure.

Despite enduring India’s partition tragedy in 1947, Advani’s commitment to a more secular India remained unwavering. As an RSS pracharak, he pursued this vision diligently, particularly in Rajasthan.

Last month, former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, 35 years after his demise.
