Ms. Sangita Reddy had formally joined the Apollo Group in 1983. She drew inspiration from her father and Founding Chairman, Dr Prathap C Reddy whose mission was to bring healthcare within the reach of every individual in the country. A BSc graduate from the Women’s Christian College in Chennai, Ms. Reddy also holds a post-graduate degree and has done executive courses in Hospital Administration from the National University of Singapore, Rutgers University and Harvard University.

It was under her confidently led stewardship that Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad bloomed as Asia’s first Health City – an example that helped develop multi-dimensional holistic healthcare in India. Steady Endeavours to Success

Rising up the ladder of success with each sturdy step was not a cakewalk for Mr. Bhagat but nevertheless he unrelentingly pursued the path by defying all odds owing to his sheer determination and self-belief. As he puts it, “I had set up my owntravel agency while simultaneously doing my studies. After completing my MBA in Finance from IIM, Bangalore in 2001, I received an offer from a consulting firm in Barcelona. But it had to be revoked in the light of the World Trade Centre crash. I thought to utilize that time in a constructive manner and took to teaching English and Maths to MBA aspirants.” He adds, “After joining Kotak Mahindra Bank in their Delhi branch in 2001, I rose to head the bank’s wealth management practice for Mumbai by 2007. The beginnings of the dream to start out on my own were seeded in mid-2007. It was in April 2008 that seven of us, including Yatin Shah and Amit Shah, decided to start on our own. But instead of going all out on our own, we decided to pursue a path of professional entrepreneurship.

We approached Nirmal Jain, Founder and Chairman, IIFL Holdings Ltd, and were given the responsibility of setting up IIFL Wealth as a unit of the IIFL group. We have now established ourselves as one of the leading investment management companies in India in less than a decade.”

Creating Opportunity out of Adversity

For a resilient person, every adversity, challenge, trial, obstacle, or problem is an opportunity for greatness and a problem is usually perceived by him as an opportunity to introduce an innovative solution to it. Talking about the challenging times and their enriching effects on him in terms of the experiences gained and the lessons learnt, Mr. Bhagat states, “We started in 2008 amidst the global financial meltdown and it was no less than a trial by fire. We remained modest and grew in a systematic manner. The period before 2008, when the global financial crisis occurred, whatever a wealth manager did, he made money. Private bankers started taking credit of great returns on themselves rather than admitting that it was a function of the market. Wealth management became a distribution market, almost like broking, where healthy commissions were easy to make by selling products.”

He further adds, “The scenario was gloomy the world over following the economic meltdown across asset classes. As someone who has had failure and adverse circumstances as my starting points, life has moulded me to be unafraid and undaunted in business. Having worked in the industry for a good amount of time, we knew the service and the gaps of most banking players in the game. The realisation that as good advisors, we needed to take care of a client’s multifarious needs and not merely sell financial products, got us headed in a direction that seemed to work. We saw that there was a gap for a consolidated balance sheet, more effective tracking and monitoring of investments. It was only obvious that good advisors should do all of this, not just sell products.”

Revealing that perseverance had been his key to success in adversity, he says, “Our entrepreneurial journey coincided with the 2008 turmoil in financial markets. A simple advice that came my way – not to wait for the global situation to improve but rather tread the chosen path with renewed vigour and remain patient about the milestones we had set – has made all the difference.”

Innovating His Way to the Top

Being an innate trendsetter, Mr. Bhagat has always promoted innovation and has charted his own trajectories of success. As he elaborates, “We built a strong advisory practice as opposed to a prevalent commission-based model in the industry. IIFL Investment Managers began in 2008, at a time when the market was a volatile place to be in. The setting up of the wealth division for IIFL was of a professional entrepreneurship where interests of all the stakeholders were aligned. Our employees own around 21 pc stake in the company and function with an entrepreneurial mindset in a vibrant eco-system. This in turn kept us aligned to the long-term interest of the clients. When every other organization was cutting corners, we found it to be the best time to hire quality people and acquire companies which were complementary to the business.” He adds, “Our assets under management, advice and distribution jumped 38.81% in the last one year and stands at Rs1317.62 billion (as on 31st March 2018), making us one of India’s largest private wealth management firm in terms of assets under advice and management.”

Finally, he declares with pride, “We started off with pure wealth advisory and management services and have metamorphosed into one of the largest wealth management companies offering Wealth Management, Asset Management, Credit Solutions, Estate Planning and Corporate Finance.”

The adage ‘Behind every successful man there is a woman’ holds true for Mr. Bhagat, who is all praise for his wife for her continual support. He declares elatedly, “My family has always been supportive of my entrepreneurial pursuits. My biggest inspiration lies in my family – my wife, Shilpa has always stood beside me in thick and thin. She has been a pillar of support throughout my life and urged me to quit my stable job at Kotak where I headed the bank’s wealth management practice and start my own venture. I am grateful for her support and she takes the entire credit for meticulously nurturing the entire family as one with love, care, respect, patience and endurance. I am also inspired by my kids; children can teach you how to balance life between work and play.”

Reforming Food Supply Chain

With a diverse background spanning multiple domains, Mr. Saptarshi Choudhury possesses comprehensive knowledge of business operations. After recognising a significant gap in the food supply chain industry, he took it upon himself to build a business that aims to transform the way the food and beverage industry operates. His venture, Farm to Plate does that while being simple to adapt, filling the gaps in the existing food supply chain system. It is also the first food supply chain solution that connects every stakeholder to the other and makes them part of the system.

Mr. Saptarshi Choudhury comes from a technical background. He completed his graduation in electrical engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Agartala, and then pursued his MTech from Tripura University. With a solid background in electrical engineering, he established a strong foundation in the field. He gained practical experience by working with a central PSU, a government-owned public sector undertaking in India, where he managed operations for a project valued at over Rs.100 crore. This role served as
his initial introduction to management activities within the construction industry. In those initial days in the construction segment, Mr. Choudhury encountered certain challenges. He witnessed the inner workings of the construction sector and subsequently went on to other roles. His career path took him into many areas where he gradually learned the ropes
of management. From an electrical site engineer, he went on to work as an HR consultant and slowly progressed into the business management realm. It is this diverse experience that helped in shaping his current endeavours and professional growth.

FARM TO PLATE, THE FIRST FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN SOLUTION

In 2017, Mr. Choudhury joined Paramount Software Solutions Inc. as a Business Development Manager and went on to lead the Emerging Technology vertical soon after. Somewhere around last year, he noticed a gap in the blockchain in the food supply industry. He conceptualised and started building Farm to Plate, which is the first food supply chain solution that aims to connect every stakeholder to the other and make them part of the system. They are also looking to connect consumers and farmers directly – enabling consumer food trust through transparency. The vision of the Blockchain team of Farm to Plate was to develop a product to transform the way the food and beverage industry operates.

Transparency in the supply chain is one of the key challenges and Mr. Choudhury has committed himself to address this through Farm to Plate. He wanted to build something that made a difference and yet was simple to adapt to fill the gaps in the existing food supply chain systems.

HH Mahant Swami Maharaj serves as the 6th spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan and currently holds the revered position of ‘Guru’ within the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. This global socio-spiritual organisation, founded in 1905, champions a vision of strengthening global harmony for building a just, peaceful, and happy world. The crowning jewel of this vision is BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham, an architectural marvel in New Delhi and New Jersey, the USA. BAPS Global Network consists of more than 1100 Hindu temples and 3,850 centres around the world. Guided by the spiritual leader, these temples and cultural complexes serve as the symbols of Indian heritage and culture. These holy shrines also actively engage in community welfare activities.

EARLY YEARS

HH Mahant Swami Maharaj has been an epitome of saintliness for over 90 years. He was born to a Gujarati couple, Dahiben and Manibhai Narayanbhai Patel, on September 13, 1933, in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India. A few days after his birth, he received blessings from Brahmaswarup Shastriji Maharaj, the founder of BAPS, who named him Keshav. His family affectionately called him Vinu.

ACADEMIC BRILLIANCE

Vinu’s formative years were spent in Jabalpur, where he completed his 12th grade at Christ Church Boys’ Senior Secondary School. He continued his academic pursuits in his native place, Anand in Gujarat (India), where he enrolled at the College of Agriculture. However, his encounter with His Holiness Yogiji Maharaj in 1951-52 marked a turning point in his life. Impressed by his dedication and attention to detail, Yogiji Maharaj inspired him to embrace the path of renunciation. After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, he took “parshad diksha’’ from Yogiji Maharaj in 1957. He was also renamed Vinu Bhagat during the ceremony.

Gradually, his spiritual journey with Yogiji Maharaj gained momentum and he was assigned to oversee daily correspondence and services. In 1961, during the Kalash Mahotsav of the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Gadhada, Yogiji Maharaj bestowed Bhagwati Diksha upon 51 educated youths, including Vinu Bhagat, who was then 28 years old. Thereafter, he assumed the title of Swami Keshavjivandas.

Following the Diksha ceremony, Yogiji Maharaj instructed the 51 newly initiated sadhus to pursue Sanskrit studies in Mumbai. Swami Keshavjivandas assumed the role of head (‘mahant’) at Dadar Mandir and earned the title of Mahant Swami over time. After the earthly departure of Yogiji Maharaj in 1971, Mahant Swami dedicated himself completely to Pramukh Swami Maharaj–Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s fifth spiritual successor. After their first meeting in 1951, HH Mahant Swami Maharaj immersed himself in the saintliness and spiritual loftiness of his guru Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Following his guru’s wishes, he tirelessly traversed India and the world to spread moral values and inspire and strengthen satsang in devotees. Gradually, he was summoned to take a leading role in significant celebrations. Additionally, he served as a trusted advisor for crucial decisions about the organisation.

In 2012, Pramukh Swami Maharaj declared HH Mahant Swami Maharaj as his spiritual successor. Following the former’s demise in 2016, HH Mahant Swami Maharaj assumed the mantle as the sixth guru in the Gunatit Parampara tradition of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Today, he leads BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha and also presides as the guru and spiritual guide for countless devotees worldwide.

Through his visionary approach, HH Mahant Swami Maharaj plays a significant role in transforming society by transcending boundaries and enhancing humanitarian values. The revered spiritual leader demonstrated his exceptional compassion and leadership during the tumultuous COVID-19 pandemic and the onset of the Ukraine war. He also mobilised volunteers with a resolute call to action. He instilled in them a shared understanding of protecting life despite geographical boundaries. Several relief initiatives and awareness campaigns were sparked as a result of his heartfelt appeal. Additionally, the spiritual guru motivated everyone to face those challenging times with resilience and relentless commitment.

GLOBAL RECOGNITION

In 2017, HH Mahant Swami Maharaj was honoured with the prestigious ‘Key to the City’ by mayors of various cities, including Toronto, Lilburn, Irving, and Chicago. This recognition underlines the global impact of his spiritual leadership and the reverence he commands beyond the boundaries of BAPS.

Furthermore, in 2020, HH Mahant Swami Maharaj authored “Satsang Diksha,” a book that outlines a path believed to lead followers to Moksha. His discourses have enlightened countless devotees by motivating them and transforming their lives.
