SAFF U-18: Indian Team Clinches Women’s Championship title

On Friday, the Indian football team clinched the SAFF U-18 Women’s Championship title at Jamshedpur in Jharkhand. The win was owed to a superior goal difference.

Indian lost to Bangladesh with 0-1 but managed to emerge as the champion of SAFF U-18 with a goal difference of +11 in comparison to +3 of Bangladesh. By scoring five goals in the tournament, Lynda Kom emerged as a valuable player for the Indian team with the highest goal scorer of the tournament.

In the last league game, Bangladesh edged India by a solitary goal. While in the fifth minute, Shubhangi found space in the opposition box and took a shot that went directly to Bangladesh goalkeeper Rupna. After Nitu placed the ball past Rupna in the 40th minute, the ball bounced off the post and straight into the arms of Bangladesh’s goalkeeper.

At the interval, Thomas Dennerby substituted Poonam for Shubhangi post which India captain Shilky Devi attempted a long-range shot, but an Rupna blocked it.

Following that, Martina and Sunita were replaced by Naketa and Amisha, respectively. Priyanka scored a goal from outside the box in the 74th minute as Bangladesh launched a last-ditch attack.

Sindhu wins second singles title in 2022 by winning a title at Swiss Open badminton

On Sunday, badminton ace shuttler PV Sindhu clinched her second singles title in 2022 by winning a straight game over Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the summit clash of the Swiss Open Super 300 badminton tournament.

Double Olympic medalist, played her second successive final taking 49 minutes to get the better of the fourth-seeded Thai 21-16 21-8 at the St. Jakobhshalle.

In the first set, Sindhi rode her attack to open up a 3-0 lead, but Busanan kept fighting back and produced some quality shots to draw the match at 7-7. After the change of sides, Bhusan struggled with her length, giving up a 0-5 lead early on in the second game as she troubled the Thai with acute angle shots.

Sindhu lost only once out of 17 matches against Busanan at the Hong Kong Open 2019.

After losing to Rio Olympics gold medalist Carolin Marin of Spain in the final of the last edition, Sindhu finally lifted the trophy. She was extremely happy as she also claimed the World Championship gold in 2019.

Earlier this year in January, Sindhu won the Syed Modi international Super 300 in Lucknow.

The women’s ice hockey team qualified for the final in the Union WIHT in Dubai

The Ice Hockey team of Ladakh Women’s Ice Hockey Foundation represented India at the Union Women Ice Hockey Tournament in Dubai on March 20 and won the Silver medal. The team has been qualified for the finals.

The team made it to the international tournament for the first time. Even in the face of challenges, the players showed their mettle.

The players said, “The team approached Saspol Constituency Councillor Smanla Dorje Nurboo on March 10 for arranging Rs. 10.56 lacs for the travel and visa expenses of 20 athletes”.

As a result of his close friend’s help and a funding campaign, the councillor was able to sponsor the team for the Dubai tournament.

Councillor RK Mathur learned about the matter, and he asked the team to support the cause with discretionary funds.

Ladakh girls proved that determination can help achieve dreams.

Councillor Smanla expressed gratitude to Lieutenant Governor RK Mathur for his support, and he also thanked Krishna Allavaru, joint secretary, All India Congress Committee, Srinivas BV, president, Indian Youth Congress, and Harsimran Kaur Bajwa, secretary PYC Ladakh, for their timely intervention and support.

FIH Pro League hockey: India beat Argentina 4-3

Indian men’s hockey team beat Argentina by 4-3 in a dramatic second match of its FIH Pro League tie. Following two powerful penalty corner strikes from Jugraj Singh, Mandeep Singh scored the game-winning goal in the last minute and avenge its first leg shot-out defeat here.

In the 20th and 52nd minutes, Jugraj scored meanwhile Hardik Singh scored in the 17th minute from the penalty corner. Varun Kumar’s drag-flick was saved by the Argentine goalkeeper, but the ball fell to Hardik who smashed the ball home to give India the lead.

After being stick-checked by an Argentina player, captain Amit Rohida won another PC. In the second quarter, Argentina was awarded a penalty stroke, but the decision was reversed after India appealed. India scored two goals in three minutes at Kalinga Stadium in the second quarter after a sluggish first quarter.

Argentina’s scorers were Della Torre Nicolas (40th), Domene Tomas (51st) and Ferreiro Martin (56th).

With the win, India remained at the second spot with 16 points from eight matches in the league. Netherland stood at the number one position meanwhile Argentina stood at fourth position with 11 points from 6 matches.

Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships: 39 medals for India

Indian claims a whopping 39 medals at Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships in Amman, Jordan. India contingent concluded its campaign with 15 gold, 10 silver, and 14 bronze; in which Vishwanath Suresh (48kgs) and Vansahj (63.5kg) clinched the gold medals in the men’s youth competition.

On Monday night, Vishwanath won with a thumping 5-0 win over Kyrgyzstan’s Ergeshov Bekzat and Vanshaj secured the second gold by registering a 4-1 win over Uzbekistan Javokhir Ummataliev.

The junior team finished the event by winning 21 medals- eight gold, seven silver, and six bronze. Whereas the youth boxers secured seven gold, three silver, and eight bronze medals.

Indian youth team secured third place in the medals table with 18 medals- Raman (51kg), Anand Yadav (54kg) and Deepak (75kg) won bronze medals with semi-final finishes in the men’s section.

Nivedita Karki (48kgs), Tamanna (50kgs), Shaheen Gill (60kgs), Ravina (63kgs), and Muskan (75 kgs) won the gold medals in the Indian women youth team.  In the last edition held in Dubai, India’s medal count was the same, but its gold medal tally was higher by one than last year’s. 352 boxers featured in the tournament from across 21 countries including, India, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Iran, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

IND vs SL: Rishab Panth Breaks Record of Fastest Test fifty by an Indian

Rishab Panth broke Kapil Dev’s record and registers himself in the fastest Test fifty by an Indian. Pant lit up the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Day 2 by smashing a blistering half-century off just 28 deliveries.

The 24-year-old broke the record created in 1982 against Pakistan in Karachi by the legendary World Cup-winning captain.

During his 28 ball delivery, he smashed seven fours and two humungous sixes. The flamboyant wicketkeeper-batter took Sri Lankan bowlers to the cleaner by creating a breathtaking record but got out right after reaching his 50. From the word go, the left-hander cruised 5- in the 42nd over of India’s second inning and entertained one and all with his sensational batting.

BCCI posted on its Twitter handle, “Rishanb Panth surpasses Kapil Dev to score the fastest 50 by an Indian in Test cricket. Take a bow, Rishabh”.

The third in the list of fastest fifty by an Indian is Shardul Thakur scoring 50 in 31 balls in the Oval Test against England last year. In 2008, the former Indian opener Virendra Sehwag scored 50 in 32 balls against England in Chennai.

Cristiano Ronaldo holds the all-time scoring record with 807 goals

After a spectacular hat-trick against Premier League opponent Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo etched his name in the record books as professional football’s all-time greatest scorer with 807 goals.

At Old Trafford, Ronaldo’s 12th-minute opener was a superb strike from a distance that helped him equal the record. He wrote on Instagram, “Tremendously happy with my first hat-trick since I came back to Old Trafford! Nothing beats the feeling of being back on the pitcher and helping the team with goals and efforts.”

Winning with 3-2, this was the 59th treble of Ronaldo’s career and first for the Old Trafford side since 2008 post his return.

Ronaldo has scored goals for Sporting, United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and the Portugal national team. However, there is no official record of the top goal scorer in football, but the world governing body estimates that Austro-Czech Josef Bican scored 805 goals during his career from 1931 to 1955.

There have been more than 1,000 goals scored by Brazilian strikers Pele and Romario each during their careers, but those figures include- goals scored in amateur, unofficial, and friendly matches.

ICC Rankings: Ravindra Jadeja Becomes Number One All-Rounder In Test Cricket

Ravindra Jadeja rose to the number one spot in the ICC Test rankings for all-rounders after his match-winning performance against Sri Lanka in the first Test in Mohali. Taking the top spot from West Indies’ Jason Holder, Jadeja displaced Holder.

Showing his extraordinary skill in the series opener against Sri Lanka, the Indian spinner has climbed to the top of the rankings for the second time in a row. India all-rounder was adjudged Player of the Match after scoring an unbeaten 175 in the first innings to help India to a formidable total of 574/8 declared.

In the first innings, he went on to claim a five-wicket haul for the Lankans, and the best figures of the second innings too with 4/46. With his 175 scores, Jadeja has also surpassed Kapil Dev’s long-standing record for an Indian batting at 7 or below in Test cricket.

HSBC Women’s World Championship champion Ko Jin-young shatters records

World No.1 Ko Jin-young shattered yet more golfing records by winning the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore. Since becoming a member of the LPGA Tour in 2018, she recorded 13 victories and won a remarkable sixth tournament from her last ten starts.

After hitting 66 in her final round, the South Korean broke Annika Sörenstam’s 16-year-old LPGA record for consecutive rounds in the 60s. This is Ko’s 15th consecutive round in the 60s and her 30th consecutive sub-par round in the LPGA.

Ko said, “First of all, I’m just proud of myself to record the 60s in 15 rounds straight. So I’m happy. I feel amazing right now”.

Ko recorded the staggering numbers (more on those shortly), but what’s most impressive is that she did it while battling through half of Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore.

Despite her world-record-breaking achievements, Ko’s victory was not without controversy.

Overnight, she was one stroke behind Chun In-gee, and as Chun’s challenge faded in the third round, Ko got off to a sluggish start on the final day, parring the first seven holes before storming back with five birdies in the final six.

Indian Women Skipper Mithali Raj becomes first woman cricketer at six Cricket World Cups

On Sunday, Mithali Raj became the first and only woman to appear at sid ICC Women’s Cricket World Cups by leading India in the opening game.

39-year-old Indian Women’s Cricket team skipper could manage nine runs in 36 balls as she was caught by Pakistan Diana Baig off Nashra Sandhu’s bowling.

According to ICC, the right-hander has now equaled Australian great Belinda Clark by captaining the ICC Women’s World Cup for the fourth time- Clark’s tenure spanned from 1993 to 2005. Both of them are the only two-player who have captained their country for more than two World Cups.

Mithali, on the other hand, outstrips her fellow hitter in terms of time between first captaining her country and last doing so, with a gap of 17 years between the two.

Indian skipper clinched the record of former Pakistan cricketer Javed Miandad appearing in the first six Men’s Cricket World Cup between 1975 and 1996 along with Sachin Tendulkar’s starting his career in 1992.
