India is on track to break its own record for rice exports in 2025-26, thanks to strong output and renewed global demand. The Indian Rice Exporters Federation forecasts shipments of basmati and non-basmati rice to increase by 16% to 23.5 million tonnes, exceeding the previous peak of 22.35 million tonnes in 2022-23. Exports fell in 2023-24 due to restrictions on non-basmati types, but rebounded strongly once the curbs were relaxed, reaching 20.2 million tonnes last year.
Exporters now aim to reach 30 million tonnes by 2026-27, a milestone India has never reached. The US Department of Agriculture also expects India’s exports to remain strong, at roughly 25 million tonnes in 2025-26. Strong government incentives and improved farming practices have increased output, making India the world’s greatest rice producer in 2024-25, with 150 million tonnes.
India exports rice to over 172 countries and is pursuing new markets with low penetration. The Indian Rice Exporters Federation identified 26 potential markets, including Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan, and Mexico. Expanding market share in these nations could help India meet its lofty export targets. With rising yields, increased production, and massive surplus stocks, India is strengthening its position in the global rice trade.
