India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission gets Goddard Astronautics Award from AIAA

India’s lunar mission Chandrayaan-3 has been awarded the prestigious 2026 Goddard Astronautics Award by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), recognising the mission’s historic contribution to space exploration. The award honours the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for successfully achieving a soft landing near the Moon’s south pole in August 2023, a feat accomplished for the first time in human history.

The award was presented during the AIAA ASCEND Conference in Washington DC. India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, accepted the honour on behalf of ISRO. According to the citation issued by AIAA, Chandrayaan-3 was recognised for deepening scientific understanding of the Moon and contributing significantly to future lunar exploration efforts.

The Goddard Astronautics Award is considered AIAA’s highest honour in the field of astronautics and has previously been awarded to major international space missions and aerospace pioneers. Chandrayaan-3’s successful landing and rover operations generated crucial scientific data regarding the lunar south polar region, an area believed to contain valuable resources for future missions.

The recognition further strengthens India’s growing reputation as a major space power and comes amid ISRO’s ambitious plans involving human spaceflight, deep-space exploration and expanded international collaboration in the global space sector.
