Dehradun’s farmed litchi has entered the European market for the first time, with the inaugural consignment of the premium fruit exported to Italy under the facilitation of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
The first shipment, containing one ton of fresh litchi, was dispatched on June 18, marking a significant milestone for Uttarakhand’s horticulture sector and India’s fresh fruit export ambitions.
Known for its sweetness, bright red colour, delicate aroma and superior pulp quality, Dehradun litchi enjoys a strong reputation among consumers. Popular varieties grown in the region include Rose Scented, Calcuttia and Bedana. The favourable agro-climatic conditions of districts such as Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar contribute to the fruit’s premium quality.
The export is expected to create opportunities for growers and exporters by expanding access to international markets and increasing the global visibility of Uttarakhand’s horticultural produce.
According to APEDA, farmers received prices nearly 25 per cent higher than prevailing domestic market rates for the exported consignment. The improved returns are expected to encourage greater adoption of export-oriented farming practices and enhanced post-harvest management.
Officials said the shipment was made possible through coordinated efforts involving APEDA, the Uttarakhand government, exporters, farmer-producer organisations (FPOs), logistics partners and other stakeholders across the agricultural value chain.
The successful export is viewed as an important step in diversifying destinations for Indian fresh fruit exports while strengthening the country’s reputation as a supplier of high-quality horticultural products.
APEDA said it will support market access, quality assurance and capacity-building initiatives to help Indian farmers and exporters tap high-value international markets.
