August 12 is celebrated as World Elephant Day that aims to bring the attention of the people to the conservation and protection of Asian and African elephants. This day is celebrated to encourage the public to visit sustainable sanctuaries that take care of elephants and advocate for them.
ZooTampa’s Animal Care Supervisor Brandi Witmer said that these elephants are on the decline and are an endangered species and they want to make sure that everyone is aware of where they are and wants people to help them as much as they can. The Senior VP and Chief Zoological officer of ZooTampa Dr. Larry Killmar said that their whole effort is to make sure the elephants are still on the face of the earth five decades from now. They are making sure of the breeding and conservation of species. They want to inspire kids to come to the zoo and learn about elephants, their nature, and their habitat.
A herd of six African Elephants at the ZooTampa have been rescued, rehabilitated, and cared for by the team of animal specialists at Lowry Park. It is operated by the Lowry Park Zoological Society as an independent 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
