Slovak Ambassador to India Robert Maxian has described Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Slovakia as a “historic opportunity” to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries. Modi is scheduled to visit Slovakia from June 14 to 16, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country since Slovakia’s independence in 1993.
In a video ahead of the visit, Ambassador Maxian welcomed the Prime Minister and expressed hope that the trip would further deepen relations between India and Slovakia across multiple sectors. The visit follows high-level exchanges between the two countries, including President Droupadi Murmu’s state visit to Slovakia in April 2025 and Slovak President Peter Pellegrini’s visit to India for the AI Impact Summit in February 2026.
During the visit, Modi will arrive in Bratislava on June 14 and will receive a ceremonial welcome at the historic castle the following day. He is also scheduled to hold delegation-level and one-on-one talks with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. The Prime Minister is scheduled to meet President Pellegrini at the Presidential Palace, where a state banquet will be hosted in his honour.
The visit is also expected to strengthen defence cooperation between the two nations. Ambassador Maxian noted that Slovakia has been a major supplier of defence technologies to India since 1993, while India’s growing domestic defence manufacturing has transformed the partnership into a more collaborative relationship. He added that Slovakia is now also purchasing defence technologies from India, reflecting two-way cooperation in the sector.
