President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday congratulated Indian athletes Gulveer Singh and Harjinder Kaur for winning silver medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, describing their performances as a matter of pride for the nation.
Rashtrapati Bhavan on X shared that President Murmu lauded Gulveer Singh for creating history as the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the men’s 10,000m event. Gulveer secured silver with a time of 27:49.78, finishing behind Australia’s Ky Robinson after a strong final-lap sprint.
Congratulating the athlete, the President said his achievement had earned India its maiden Commonwealth Games medal in the discipline and wished him success in the future.
President Murmu also extended her congratulations to Harjinder Kaur, claiming silver in the women’s 69kg weightlifting event. The Punjab lifter recorded a career-best total of 227kg, comprising 101kg in the snatch and 126kg in the clean and jerk, to finish behind Canada’s Charlotte Simoneau.
Harjinder also produced a memorable performance by rewriting the Commonwealth Games snatch record twice during the competition and improved on the bronze medal she won at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
India continued its strong campaign in Glasgow, with three Indian boxers also advancing to the semi-finals, guaranteeing the country at least three more medals in the tournament.
