India Wins One Gold, Three Silver Medals at International Biology Olympiad 2026

India continued its impressive performance in global science competitions by winning one gold and three silver medals at the 37th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2026, held in Vilnius, Lithuania. Each participant of the Indian contingent returned with a medal.

Bhavyaa Gunwal from Haryana secured India’s gold medal, with Soumil Maity from West Bengal, Nishit Kalani from Rajasthan, and Anmol Kumar from Punjab winning silver medals.

The Olympiad brought together 307 students from 78 countries, competing in six-hour practical laboratory examinations and six-hour theory tests covering molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology, animal morphology and systematics, plant computational biology, ecology and bioscience research.

A total of 31 gold, 61 silver and 91 bronze medals were awarded during this year’s competition.

The Biology Olympiad success comes just days after India recorded a clean sweep at the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2026 in Uzbekistan, where the country won four gold medals and jointly secured the top global ranking, marking one of India’s strongest showings in international science Olympiads.
