Economic Survey 2026 reveals electronics sector rising as India’s fastest-growing export category

India’s industrial landscape is undergoing a historic transformation. According to the Economic Survey 2026 presented in Parliament, the electronics sector has emerged as the country’s third-largest export category and is now poised to claim the second position, behind only traditional export leaders. This rapid rise reflects India’s growing role in the global electronics supply chain.

The most striking success story within the sector is mobile phone manufacturing. A decade ago, India’s mobile production stood at just Rs 18,000 crore. By the end of the 2025 financial year, this figure had surged to Rs 5.45 lakh crore, a nearly 30-fold increase. This remarkable growth has transformed India from an import-dependent market into the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer.

This shift has been driven by a massive expansion in manufacturing capacity. In 2014, the country had only two mobile assembly units. Today, more than 300 factories are operational nationwide. Much of this progress is attributed to the government’s Production-Linked Incentive schemes, which have attracted significant investments and encouraged companies to localise production across the value chain.

The government is now focusing on strengthening the semiconductor ecosystem through the India Semiconductor Mission, with projects such as Tata Electronics’ fabrication unit and new incentive schemes for component manufacturing. For states like Odisha, this national momentum presents a strong opportunity to build digital manufacturing clusters, generate high-tech employment, and drive long-term industrial growth.
